Cat-O-Nine Tip of the Day: The Sting of the Whip, The Joy of the Pain

Thursday, November 1, 2007

Just a little S&M to start out your November, as many of our hearty and obviously mad pirates are embarking on that adventure: NaNoWriMo.

Being a pirate, of course, I cheated and wrote about 600 words last night. I'm going to need every advantage I can steal to make it. I plan on counting blogs and emails as part of my word count, by God.

Of course, if I do, I'll make the 50,000 mark by November 10th.

A quote to get you into the mood:

Writing a novel is like making love, but it's also like having a tooth pulled. Pleasure and pain. Sometimes it's like making love while having a tooth pulled.

~Dean Koontz

Happy Teeth-pulling, Hair-pulling, Setting-the-WIP-on-Fire-in-a-Fit-of-Despair Month!

Sounds like every month for me...

Just because I'm not playing along doesn't mean I don't want to hear how everyone is doing. I expect frequent updates. Or rants. LOL!

LOL! That's wonderful.

Here's my favorite writing quote. (Though I substitute laptop for typewriter).

I get up in the morning, torture a typewriter until it screams, then stop.

LMAO. I love that quote and especially from that author! LOL

And sad enough if we count emails, I'll hit the mark by Saturday. I might even be there by the end of today. Someone take my emailing away!

Marnee! That's a great quote. I often wonder if I can hear my keyboard screaming at me. Especially when I'm pounding away at it at 3am. LOL

I didn't know emails and blogs counted!

I thought this was going to be hard.....
LMAO

Well, here's one that doesn't sound so depressing and is perhaps a bit more productive for our undertaking...

Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.

And Hellion - I think that writing 600 words last night isn't cheating, it's foresight.

600 words is 600 words, no matter the date you write them on.

Terri Osburn said...

That explains a lot, Marnee. I have night blindness.

*big eye roll*

LMAO, Ter!

oh, hey - those of you who did trick or treating last night - did you guys have fun and collect a lot of bounty? We only had 5 trick or treaters so now, because I HAVE to eat all the leftover candy, I'm nauseous.

The hits you take for the team, ya know?

Sin said...

Where the hell did the blog tag Dan Akyroid come from Hellion? You say I make up crazy ones... Yeesh!

Sin said...

Emails and blogs are not supposed to count.. but we're pirates.

Last night:

Easily the trick-or-treater we enjoyed most was the little pirate who couldn't be more than 4. He was bold for his age--after an entire evening of very shy children who seemed very confused by this ritual of free candy--and he swaggered up in his red and white striped trousers, a red skull cap on his head, a 12-in plastic sword waving fiercesomely, and a twinkle in his eye. He arrived with a group of less confident children, and as Chris calmly told all the children to take one piece of candy, Little Jack reached in with one hand, snagged a piece, then with a gimlet stare right at Chris, snagged a second piece with his other hand. We adults all sucked in a breath at this disobedience of Candy Courtesy. Then Jack grinned roguishly, spun on one heel, and leaped off the porch like a pirate swinging from one ship back to the other. He waved his sword maniacally, screaming as he ran down the walk: "I got it! I got it!"

Back in the house, we looked at Chris: "You just got pillaged, mate."

I made up the Dan Akroyd for you, Sin. I kept referring to S&M, which made me think of Exit to Eden, which made me think of Dan Akroyd (because no one wants to remember Rosie O'Donald was also in that film.)

It makes sense.

Marnee Bailey said...

ROTFLMAO!

You gotta love the pirates. That's some quality parenting right there.

Hellie Sinclair said...

I know! But we couldn't do anything...here we are laughing at this impolite behavior like it was the funniest thing ever. Parents and us laughing alike.

The kids who'd taken ONE piece of candy didn't seem as amused as we adults though.

Terri Osburn said...

There were pirates everywhere last night! More pirates than any other costume. Though all those little babies and toddlers dressed as animals were pretty adorable. Monkeys, giraffs, lady bugs, tigers, bears, lions, bumble bees, and elephants were all around. LOL!

The Wee One went as a pink witch but she couldn't keep her hat from blowing off so I wore it all night. So I sort of dressed up.

Marnee Bailey said...

I think sometimes it's just impossible to chastise them.

Although hopefully he didn't get a butt-kicking from some spiteful ghoul. Two pieces of candy is high treason, I say.

LMAO - I was going to ask the same thing about Dan Akroyd, Sin! I'm reading and reading and then his name catches my eye and I'm like WTH does Dan Akroyd have to do with this blog! Your mind works in mysterious ways Hellion!

We had a very successful T&T night. My son filled half of his huge bag (which was enough for him - he'd rather give out the candy, and steel a little now and then, than work for it), daughter filled 2 Wal-mart bags and the DH scored a hot dog, 4.75 oz of Junior Mints (the movie/theater size) and hot chocolate with Baileys! I , on the other hand, held down the fort and read a couple of chapters in my book! A win/win for everyone involved. And thank God this blessed holiday is over!!!!

Marnee Bailey said...

Awh, a pink witch. I bet she was cute. :)

Marnee Bailey said...

That does sound like fun, Irish. Hot chocolate with Baileys.... I have never partaken, but I'm interested... very interested....

irisheyes said...

I have to laugh about the little pirate filching an extra piece. When we were first married I bought a bag of miniature sweetart packets and while the DH was away I gave out 1 packet to each kid. When he got home and found out how cheap I was being there was almost talk of divorce! I wasn't being cheap I'm just T&T ignorant. Anyway, his goal all his life has been to give out the big candy bars and this year we achieved that goal! You should have seen the looks on the kids faces when I gave them a huge Hershey's or Twizzlers. It was hilarious! They went screaming down the walk "Look what the lady gave me!!!"

irisheyes said...

That pink witch does sound awfully cute Terri! Did you make or buy?

Terri Osburn said...

I forgot to mention I saw the East of Eden movie - several times. LOL! I win the weird award again!

What is this about only taking *one* piece? That is so cheap! When I was a kid we got at least three or four little things from each house. Unless you spring for the big stuff (go Mr. Irish!) then it's just one but otherwise, don't be so stingy.

Yep, Marnee, she did look cute. The costume was a little tight like everything else this child owns but she had fun and that's all that matters. I was surprised how many kids were out just in regular clothes. Where's the fun in that?

Terri Osburn said...

Oh, and there was this little group of boys all dressed as a super hero or fighter character of some kind and they were all doing ninja moves on each other.

I thanked my lucky stars again I had a girl. Whew!

Terri Osburn said...

Hahaha!!! Good one, Irish. Make or buy. That's funny...

Hellie Sinclair said...

Lord, almost divorced over the amount of candy given out?

Actually, considering...I thought Chris & Pam were debating it too. Chris kept "hinting" that they should have had three bags of candy (and he gave out all chocolate bars...but snack size ones--still though, not cheap hard candy), while Pam was like, "I already spent $10 on candy for these heathens! We don't need a third bag!"

Irish, your hubby is the bomb...I'm trick or treating at your house. And any place where you can score a hot dog and hot-chocolate with Baileys is a place where I want to T&T.

Hellie Sinclair said...

East of Eden is a James Dean movie, I believe; and Exit to Eden is a sad little comedy based off of Anne Rice's erotica book of the same name. Which movie have you seen multiple times? *LOL*

Terri Osburn said...

Sorry, I'm an idiot and should never do two things at once. It's timesheet day! Bloody hell.

Exit to Eden I've seen several times. On purpose. I thought it was actually kind of funny. LOL!

Hellie Sinclair said...

Don't get me wrong. I think the movie is really funny. Nothing like the book though. NOTHING.

Tiffany Clare said...

hehe...love the quote.

I've got nothing so far for my nano book...but I am cheating (do I get honorary pirate status?)... :D I'll be using and rewriting the current 4K cause I have to take the book in a different direction...hence the reason I stopped at 4K!

Hellie Sinclair said...

Yes, Tiff, you're definitely granted honorary Pirate status for cheating.

Terri Osburn said...

*wiping her screen*

Sorry, don't mind me, that last one just made me spew....

LMAO!!!!

Tiffany Clare said...

I really don't get the nano site... but for those who know how to do the buddy sign up... my id is tiffinacharms

Hellie Sinclair said...

I can't do a buddysearch, Tiff. Can you copy and paste your URL from NaNo so we can add you that way?

So I checked out the link and that's actually pretty cool. If I had the time I'd do it. It would be fun to be able to see your progress right there in pie charts and graphs. LOL! And you can post snippets too.

I hope you guys all find each other.

Hellie Sinclair said...

Oh, good, thanks Tiff, I added you!

Thanks Tiff, I added you too.
